October 30th, 2009  |  Published in Nonprofit Career Month

October has been a celebration of the nonprofit career.  Idealist and the Workforce Coalition have brought together nonprofit professionals across the country to celebrate and expand their careers this month.

If you have checked out the Nonprofit Career Month site, make sure you do it before the month is up.  The site offers a blog, resources, and best practices to expand your nonprofit career.

I’m already looking forward to next year.

In the final blog of the series “Odd Jobs” I will be exploring the job of a nonprofit Convention Planner.

In the nonprofit sector there are a lot of event planners, at one time I actually thought about this position, because of the prevalence of need in the sector.  All nonprofit organizations have fundraising events that need planning.  After a recent flight to Baltimore, where I sat next to a nonprofit Convention Planner I realized that beyond event planning this nonprofit job takes a lot of marketing, fundraising, and organization skills.

The Convention Planner I met hosted an education convention about Japanese History, which focused on the avenue of media for learning.  This convention now in its 10th year hosts over 20,000 attendees each year.

This genre of work in the nonprofit sector was something I never thought of, but it got me thinking.  How many conventions have I been too that are actually run by nonprofit organizations and how many others have I heard of.  There are conventions for women, golfers, Star Wars fanatics and the like.  All of which may have been run by nonprofit organizations.  Actually although the convention industry is very profitable, most conventions are run by nonprofit membership associations or other organizations providing education.

The job of a Convention Planner holds a lot of different responsibilities, including sales, marketing, event planning, staff management, volunteer management, and organization, among many others. Check out the job descriptions below for information on all their responsibilities.
