Leadership

This semester I am taking a course on human resource management in the nonprofit sector. For my final paper I would like to focus on the effects leadership in organizations have on the morale of staff.
My focus has come from observations of some unhappy employees in my area. Many do not feel they are valued, while others receive no support from leadership. Much of the time this leads to burnout and a desperate plea for a new job.
Over time I have come to be convinced that strong leadership that values employees is crucial to keeping staff motivated and community benefit organizations successful… but for some reason I continuously see leadership not paying attention to staff morale.
Not to be a complete downer. I have met leaders that do provide great staff motivation, which leads to better productivity, long-term staff, and better programs. It can happen.
So… I am looking for your opinions. How much do you see the effects of leadership on your own happiness and motivation at work? Are you seeing leadership having effects on other employees in your organization?
Please share your stories. Maybe together we can get to the bottom of this.

Leadership
October is Nonprofit Career Month. To help celebrate the amazing young leaders with careers in the sector and to final bring a conversation to fruition, Sam Davidson and I will be blogging about our ideas of nonprofit leadership, how we have become leaders, and tips for other young leaders to grow.
About six months ago, Sam Davidson and I started discussing the concept of young leaders in the nonprofit sector on Twitter. Each Monday and Wednesday in October we will be writing about our leadership experiences in the sector. We will each take alternate days to discuss our takes on what Seth Godin says are the four factors leadership is scarce:
- It’s uncomfortable to stand up in front of strangers.
- It’s uncomfortable to propose an idea that might fail.
- It’s uncomfortable to challenge the status quo.
- It’s uncomfortable to resist the urge to settle.
Sam and I will each talk about when we’ve been uncomfortable in these ways, as well as offer recommendations for future nonprofit leaders on how they, too, can become uncomfortable and then work through that experience to lead others within the nonprofit world.
During the month we will be discussing how you can get involved in the series. Keep an eye out and begin thinking of the ways you have built your leadership in the sector.
